Pool capital, buy land, subdivide it — and build something lasting back home.
I brought together a group of Tanzanians living in Kenya who wanted to invest back home. The idea was straightforward: pool our money, buy a large piece of land, subdivide it, and let each member own a plot. The bigger dream is to eventually develop a gated community, although members are free to sell if they wish.
It took much longer than I had imagined. Some members lost momentum, and finding the right piece of land was not easy. But eventually everything came together. Today there are eight of us. Each member owns eight plots, and we are already discussing the second phase. What began as a conversation among friends is now eight plots each, a second phase in planning, and a concrete stake in the country we come from.
